SOLSTICE, an ambitious project for the circular economy of textiles

The SOLSTICE project, coordinated by Axel'One and in which Polymeris is a partner, was launched today. Its main objective is to demonstrate 4 replicable systemic solutions for the territorial development of a circular and carbon-neutral economy for the major textile sectors. All stages of waste prevention and management will be integrated into a methodology based on the 5Rs: Refuse / Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, Recycle.

The project will demonstrate its concept in 4 territories in 4 European countries (France, Spain, Italy, Germany) with complementary characteristics (from small towns to regions). It will address new automated sorting solutions, as well as the chemical recycling of 4 major types of polymers in the sector: polyester, polyamide, elastane and polyurethane.

The project will also develop a traceability system based on the “digital product passport”, making it possible to track materials and prove their origin.

Co-financed by Horizon Europe, the European Union's research and innovation program, this unprecedented European public/private partnership will last three and a half years.
  • 24 European public and private entities combine their scientific and industrial expertise:
  • 8 industrial partners with expertise in sorting (PELLENC ST, ALIA), chemical recycling of PET (Recyc'Elit), textiles and related processes and recycling (FUCH, SPIN-PET,
  • INDRESMAT, CROMOGENIA, DENGE);
  • 1 company specializing in the circular economy (Circle Economy);
  • 4 local authorities (Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, Commune di Prato, Government of Catalonia, Circular Berlin);
  • the European Textile Platform (Textile ETP);
  • 5 universities, research and technology organizations (UCBL, LEITAT, DITF, IFTH, NTT);
  • 2 associations (Axel'One, TexFor);
  • 2 competitiveness clusters (Techtera and Polymeris);
  • 1 project management consultancy (Lyon Ingénieries Projets).

The SOLSTICE project will:

  • Organize a new mode of governance to deploy the circular economy through the commitment of all players, including territories and local businesses, local authorities at all levels, and citizens
  • Engage all stakeholders to ensure awareness, acceptance and success of the approach
  • Develop new solutions to implement the 5R strategy in territories
  • For recycling, demonstrate innovative chemical recycling technologies for 4 major polymer families that account for over 60% of textiles and plastics (polyester, elastane, polyamide, polyurethane), under mild conditions (low temperature, low pressure).
  • Set up actions to replicate the approach and maximize its impact.

Project information

SOLSTICE is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union. Led by Axel'One, France's platform for collaborative innovation in chemistry and the environment, the SOLSTICE consortium has a Europe-wide presence, covering the entire textile and plastics value chain. The project starts on May 1, 2024 and will last 42 months. Polymeris, the plastics, rubber and composites cluster, is a partner in this project, working to replicate the sorting and recycling solutions developed for textiles to other polymer applications. The full list of partners is available here. The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 101134989.
